Wet-into-Wet Watercolor Painting

This was a fun experiment, with painting on smaller 140lb cold press arches watercolor paper and using the wet on wet approach .
Working with a lot of water, I needed to still keep the painting bright, yet not have the painting  fade out as it dries.

Painting in acrylics these last several months, I needed to get back into my watercolor touch, by keeping the painting fresh and loose.

Watercolor painting can be tricky and exact.
Watercolor paper and pigments can be unruly at best and unforgiving at their worst.

Cabo San Lucas and Art

Taking a much needed vacation this last fall was so wonderful. While sitting out on the veranda, my mind was creating all kinds of art.

The first painting was from a trip I had taken a couple of years ago that I had wanted to paint, but with all of the other things in my life getting in the way, I had decided it was finally time to get directional and  paint the image.

This painting is of the Club Cascasdas in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Club Cascadas has stone-faced surfaced paths that meander through the sand to round sculptured villas with thatched bamboo roofs nestled in groves of palm trees and tropical flora.

The Finisterra Hotel in Cabo San Lucas was another beautiful place that provided me with a wonderful chance for some mental relaxation I so much needed. Staying at both places brought me the sense of wanting to paint as soon as I got home. I could see a painting in everything I viewed while sitting out on the veranda.

Vacation in a Painting

Thinking about my upcoming vacation, just can’t wait, so getting a little inspired was fun to paint this.
I had an artist friend suggest that I use a mixing glaze with my acrylics and wow what a big difference.

So much easier to move the paint around without it drying so quickly on me. I feel I still have a long way to go on this medium, so I have lots of small practice paintings that I should sell so I can buy more small canvases to keep up my practice. It has been fun for sure.

Acrylic painting is so much fun, though I’m still trying to get used to the medium as I’m a watercolor painter. Acrylic just gets me in the mood to paint a little more and get out of my rut with watercolor. Now that fall is in the air, I think I will start to dabble a little more in watercolor.

So I thank the medium for getting me back to my studio and in touch with painting again….

Out of my Realm

This was a canvas I thought I had ruined. I had painted three paintings and was not happy with them at all. So I bought molding paste and used a palette knife to put it over the canvas and covered all of the old brush strokes. So amazing that my canvas was like new.

I had taken several pictures from a hike over several seasons and I totally loved the fall colors. The painting was more on the contemporary side and out of my realm. The colors were fun and I would never before consider using the colors.

After using the fun colors I started having fun with color. This is a painting I had done from a trip and used the same colors from my first painting........

Contemporary Wine Art on Canvas

Contemporary acrylic wine art on a 24"x 24" canvas

Raining outside, cold, sitting by the fire, classical music and wine, I started to compose my thought on a new painting.

With a glass of fine wine in one hand and a brush in the other, this was my inspiration for me to paint a wine bottle still life.

I still love the old style, yet wanted a little contemporary feeling in my art. I used a trowel and molding paste over the canvas, to give the look of an old Tuscan building wall. I slowly layered the colors with paint and used a wet rag to move and blend it around.
The direction of the light in the painting gave my painting dimension.
